BEING THERE’: A Small Museum & A Destination in Edirne Countryside

As the main project of the semester, the focus is to design a small museum with social components in the countryside of Edirne. Other than the specifics of design and design methodology, the contents of the museum (theme, collections, works, exhibitions) and the exact location of the project in the given areas would be parts of the proposal – in parallel with the physicality of the project. Such decisions and ideas would also cover the content of social components – for this place is to be a destination for both for touristic, recreational and rather lateral activities such as studying, small gatherings and non-museum events alike. In other words, thought on the variety and type of visits, users and uses – defining an architectural program that serves not only the designated / cultural visits but as well as locals and certain communities of Edirne. For that, the particular conditions and potentials of Edirne, as a city with a rich history and as the home of prospective visitors, would also be crucial inputs for the proposal – as well as a central part of the research.
Another focus would be on the specifics of the site itself – all the components that make up a countryside in a rather natural, rural and non-urban context. This is a project that not only serves its cultural program but also as a destination to experience a particular natural setting. Such components may consist of topography, climate, seasons, flora, animals, produce, views, time, sound, sun, wind, water and earth. In that way, the proposal should be more than an isolated museum complex – working as an agency to experience such features and to relate with them at the same time.
The task is to create a physical agency for being there – and for being with whatever that makes there.
