Adaptive and Sustainable Reuse of an Industrial Heritage as Museum of Ecology
Specific to this term, we will focus on an industrial building, the Küçükçekmece Ottoman Match Factory, which was built in 1893 with its five parts. Our design problem is to find ways to create urban and architectural approaches opening other parts of this private factory for public use and to rethink the building within the ruined ecosystem of Küçükçekmece lagoon basin and within the current issues of Anthropocene. Our aim, therefore, is to relocate its function based on the proposed masterplan, to re-use and transform this building with possible extensions to it through both open and indoor public activities providing free access to people. The factory is surrounded by a lagoon which has been the object of a recent competition for the preservation of the site, exploring and interrogate the relationship between the urban infrastructure and the natural living space. The museum of ecology should enhance all the studies of preservation of biodiversity that has been made around the lagoon, combining an ecological and a cultural approach.
