Tophane: A Neighborhood under the Pressure of Gentrification
Tophane is one of the oldest industrial areas of Istanbul, which was founded during the reign of Mehmet the Second (1455). Today, it is highly likely that the neo-liberal economy and capital-oriented urban transformation will soon swallow the neighborhoods in Tophane and leave no room for middle and lower-middle-income groups to live. This area is highly under the pressure of gentrification however, it has always been a place of displacements.
How can alternative public living spaces be designed in this neighborhood that can dissolve class and cultural differences, provide shelter for different income groups and also enhance collective production, encounters and common urban practices?
