The Architectures of Transiency: Impermanent Dwelling in Insecure Times

We live in precarious, insecure times and in a state of uncertainty. The global climate and environmental crises, recent wars and conflicts, the pandemic and the subsequent economic crisis have displaced many people and left many others in a state of uncertainty and precariousness. In this process, the global city of Istanbul continues to be affected by multiple crises both within the country and in neighbouring countries and continues to receive migration rapidly. As such, it is necessary to find quick solutions to the housing crisis in the city.

Can we design a new community settlement/shelter that can provide temporary, free accommodation and perhaps employment opportunities for students coming from outside Istanbul, transient migrantstenants who have lost their homes for economic reasons, war victims or those who are homeless in any way?

For this purpose, we will develop a proposal for a new community settlement/shelter on an urban void by preserving the historical features of the area and the existing living pattern. This proposal will be planned to include an egalitarian, democratic transiency that allows circulation of use and does not displace anyone.
